Profile panel of COVID-19 biomarkers for diagnosing the severity: IL-6, CRP, LDH, D-dimer, and PLT

Abstract

Since April 2020, the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly affected the lives of more than seven million people from around the world, involving more than 200 nations. The purpose of this research is to examine the correlation between five specific biomarkers and the severity of Coronavirus disease and to propose a practical profile panel for predicting disease prognosis. Nineteen different studies for five different biomarkers including: contained Interleukin 6(IL-6), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, and platelet count (PLT) were searched on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. The level of each biomarker was detailed in severe and non-severe patients of COVID-19.  The results showed that severe COVID-19 patients had significantly lower PLT counts, while their levels of LDH, D-dimer, IL-6, and CRP were higher compared to non-severe patients. These findings suggest that the severity of COVID-19 can mostly be influenced by the biomarker levels mentioned, which can be measured in a laboratory and can be indicated as a standard prescription for tracking patients' health based on the blood tests conducted during hospitalization and treatment.
