Nasal septal abscess due to Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA): A case report

Abstract

Nasal septal abscess is rare but severe infection due to the complications that it can cause if it is poorly managed. It is characterized by the presence of pus between the septal cartilage and its mucoperichondrium and/or between the septal bone and its mucoperiosteum. Severe complications can arise from a nasal septal abscess, particularly in immunosuppressed patients.We report a case of a patient treated in our hospital. These case may remind clinicians of the different causes of nasal septal abscess such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) producing Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) in order to provide early and effective treatment to preserve the functional and aesthetic prognosis of patients with this disease. Timely diagnosis and treatment, including incision, drainage, and appropriate antibiotic coverage, are essential to prevent serious complications. To our knowledge, no previous reports on the imaging appearance of nasal septal abscess have been published, this case is the first reported with nasal septal abscess associated with Panton-Valentine leukocidin producing strains in Tunisia.
